One of Jesus' most important lessons was how He taught His
followers to have bigness of character. He demonstrated how to rise above the
others, by always being the better person. No matter what people did to hurt
Him, He always forgave them, and counseled others to always do the same.
When He
spoke of man’s power to forgive sins, and his need for doing so, these
teachings were very often misunderstood. Jesus’ take on “sin” involved the mind
and the body, because He believed that when one sins, illness will eventually
settle in if the sin remains unresolved. He taught that if you forgive sin, the
act of forgiveness would imbue your mind with natural and healthy ideas. And
this would affect your entire body, making it healthy and whole. This is the
precise nature of some progressive natural healing techniques in use today.
Jesus
believed that the mind was where every act originated, and that the body was
moved by the mind. All evil therefore comes from the mind, and all conditions
of the body are created or caused by the mind. Since every form is governed by
and subject to a law, when one misuses, inverts, or violates a law, this
mistake is called a Sin. It is a misjudgment, and a misunderstanding of the
Law. And correction of the mistake is the only way of adjustment or of
appeasing the Law.
Repentance
and forgiveness are the only means available to correct the mistake, and to
liberate you from suffering the consequences of the mistake. This requires a
deep searching of the true cause of the mistake, not just a superficial
acknowledgement and correction. Like a weed, if it is not pulled out by the
root, it will rise up again some other time.
It is often
believed that suppressed grief and anxiety can cause cancerous tumors. In other
words, a lot of sinful (Law-violating) thoughts bottled up inside can make you
very ill. Guilt is one of the most debilitating emotions to the human body. It
has been proven that people experiencing guilt actually produce a highly acidic
perspiration from their body. And imagine if that is what is on the outside,
what’s going on inside!
If we have
done something that violates the Laws of harmony and order, and we have not
taken big steps to correct it, we are at high risk of severe physical illness.
And this is what Jesus meant when He talked about correcting sins and offering
forgiveness (of oneself and others). Coming clean with all the people you have
ever harmed (including yourself) will foster a body of good health and a
peaceful mind. We must realize that to forgive is to release a part of our
disposition that is not an asset to us.
As long as
we do not forgive others, we cannot be released from our own transgressions.
The Law reads, “If ye forgive not their trespasses, neither will your Father
forgive your trespasses.” But we must put forth the first effort. Without doing
so, we lose the opportunity to gain the bigness of character that Jesus had,
and that a good life requires.
In these
times, it is even more necessary to follow this Law, as we see daily rivalries
and injustices that divide people, when we have strife and discord in our own
homes and families. The simple teachings of forgiveness have more importance
today than ever before.
