Should I Focus On The Things I Want Or Just Go For The Money?
“There are so many things that I want, I can’t seem to focus on anything specific, so can’t I just have lots of money be my goal? Wouldn’t that take care of everything?”
“My goal is to have a new car and take a trip around the world, so I’m visualizing how to get the money.”
“I’ve been working on making a lot of money and I do get more than I used to, but there’s always something that I need to use it for…so I’m no better off than I was.”
“The house of my dreams just came on the market, so I need to create the money to buy it.”
If one of these, or something similar, is your situation, you are not alone. Money is a common desire and a central fact of our existence. Almost every aspect of our life involves money in one way or another and so a lot of energy goes into thinking about it, feelings about it, and creating it or the lack of it.
We were all raised with many strong beliefs about money. There are people who are neutral about cars, houses, even relationships—but almost no one is neutral about money. It’s become an inescapable part of life. From essentials like food and shelter and healthcare, to “extras” like entertainment and travel; from the most intimate relationships (how to support our families) to the most casual (how to pay the paperboy), money seems to have threaded its way into the most remote areas of our daily life. We are certainly not to be blamed for thinking that if we just had all the money we needed, everything else would fall into place. So what about just setting about creating money? Isn’t that the best, easiest, most direct goal?
THERE IS NO “HOW”. Think about the process of creation as outlined by Abraham and others. - You ask. (You have to do this part.)
- It is given. (The universe does this part.)
- You align yourself with your desire and receive it. (Again, this is your part.)
It’s the universe’s job to deliver what you ask for. Think about that for a moment. It’s such an unfamiliar idea that it might take a little while to really see what this is saying. The universe will deliver. If I put in an order by phone or online, what is my procedure? I look through the catalogue at all the things that are available and I just check off or list the things that I want. I give my personal information and then the company delivers. When I order something from Amazon or L.L. Bean, it’s not up to me to say: Well, the most direct route from you to me is via Boston and then to Hartford and then New Haven and then to Guilford… For all I know the warehouse is in Minneapolis, and if I were in charge of the routing I’d be setting up all sorts of delays. My job is just to say what I want; it’s up to them to deliver. It’s the same with the universe, only here we not only let go of the “how” of routing and timing, we also let go of the “how” of the money. There are many ways that the universe might give you what you desire. If you desire a new car you might buy it outright. You might buy it with a loan. You might win it in a contest. A long-lost relative might die and leave you a car as a bequest. Someone in the family might find themselves with a car that doesn’t suit them and they give it to you. You might get a new job which involves a company car. All of these ways are valid, and only the vast wisdom of the universe knows which way is the one that will get a car to you the quickest. If you decide on the “how”—if you say, I’ll visualize the money and then use it to buy a car—you may be dictating the delivery route that is the longest possible way. The universe may say, seeing you commit to earning the money, Oh, we had it all lined up for you to get this car in this sweepstakes, but if you’d rather pay for it, fine!
ISN’T THIS MAKING THE UNIVERSE OUT TO BE LITERAL MINDED? CAN’T IT TELL I JUST WANT THE CAR? It’s not the universe we’re trying to convince. Think of this: the first step, Ask, is accomplished instantaneously. As soon as I formulate a desire, it is answered. Immediately. Always. The science of this is explained in our articles on quantum physics. In the zero-point field, in the realm of non-local intelligence, in “God’s world”, each desire is answered in the moment of asking. That first step takes but a moment. So does the second. So, what are all the visualizing and meditating and writing statements about? It’s about getting us in alignment with our own desire. It’s about shifting the energy of our acceptance to match that of our asking, so that we are able to receive the thing we’ve asked for. It’s ourselves we are trying to convince, not the universe. This is why it seems so fraught with error and misunderstanding; the universe isn’t that literal minded: we are. Imagine that I want a car. I decide: I’d like a Honda Insight, 60-80 mpg!, bright blue, automatic, with A/C. In the moment of my thinking, universal energy shifts. Somewhere a bright blue Insight will have an energy shift. In a parking lot somewhere there’s a vibrational movement, like a heat mirage, over a particular car. Somebody watching might even see it and say, Wow it’s hot, I must have sweat in my eyes, everything looked blurry for a moment, especially that car over there. In an office, someone will sign papers shifting the location of that car. In another place, money will change hands, a contract is signed or reneged on, a deposit is made in a bank I’ve never heard of. Someone who thought they wanted an Insight will have changed his mind and bought a Civic instead. A promotional agency will have decided to have a contest. Hundreds of people will rearrange their priorities away from having an Insight so that their entries will not win that contest. I’ll have an encounter that makes me think of contests in general, so that when an entry comes in the mail I won’t automatically trash it like I usually do… Can you see the immensity of the process? In each moment, for each desire we have, all the forces of the universe conspire to achieve it. This process is instantly set into motion, with our moment of shooting off that rocket of desire. All the rest of the process, the visions, the statements, the inspired actions, the positive thinking, is for the purpose of aligning ourselves with our own desire. Setting me up to be in the right place, right time, and right frame of mind to receive that Insight when it comes. It is me that I have to convince, not the universe. So, what does this have to do with the money? If we insert our ideas about the money into every desire, we complicate the process. We put something between ourselves and that purity of desire. When I desire “bright blue Honda Insight” I set all that process into motion, a process that is sure to bring me the car if I align myself with it. The problem then starts with these thoughts: Well, I don’t want another debt, where am I going to get the money? I could work more, take on more hours; get a second job. I could just buy it and hope for the best. Maybe I could sell something? I hate being in debt, so maybe I’d better focus on the money. How can I get that much money? My old car is only worth ___. That leaves more than half to come up with. I could sell some stuff at a yard sale, but that would only be a few hundred. Maybe a savings plan? How long would it take if I saved $50 a week? Maybe I could focus on the money, have that be my desire. Then I could just buy the car. But I know that whenever I get extra money something breaks down and I have to use it for that, it’ll take forever. Do you see how complex this becomes? Many limiting beliefs and fears arise when I step outside the pure energy of my desire. As soon as I start dictating “how”, I end up in a snarl of doubt, fear and limitation. How can the universe deliver through energy like this? It would be as if I said to L.L. Bean, well, drive down to Boston, but no, the traffic is too bad, maybe you’d better go up to Concord, New Hampshire instead; but there’s no way south from there, so you’ll have to go all the way to Vermont, and then down 91. But if it’s winter that’s too far north, the weather will be bad, so you’d better take a boat from Maine down the coast to New London…. I’d never get my package!! It’s easier to just say what you want and let the company deliver. You’ll just be there to accept delivery.
IT’S EASIER TO IMAGINE THE DIRECT EXPERIENCE It’s hard to get excited about money. Does that seem unrealistic? Do you say, Well maybe for you, but I can sure get psyched about it! But think about money totally apart from spending it. What’s to visualize? You can see your bank statement; you can imagine piles of hundred dollar bills on your dresser. You can imagine your wallet so fat it doesn’t fit in your pocket. But then what? Where’s the excitement, where’s the passion, where’s the desire? It’s in the end result, which is: What do you want the money for? Without that part, money is just paper and metal and is really quite hard to focus on for very long. Contrast thinking about a bank statement with thinking about driving that new car. Contrast thinking about a pile of cash to thinking about your new home, your wardrobe, your vacation, your kids’ private school, your trip to the spa, your relaxed state of peace that comes from having your life in order. It’s hard to get excited about money, and it’s the excitement that is required to get in alignment with your own desire, so that you can be ready to receive what the universe brings you.
MONEY IS A TRIGGER WORD What did you hear about money, when you were growing up? Money doesn’t grow on trees. Do you think I’m made out of money? Money is hard to come by. When you grow up you’ll understand how hard it is. If you heard any of these things when you were young, then like the rest of us, you have some limiting beliefs in there about the subject of money. Those beliefs are activated whenever the subject comes up, as in my example above of my thinking about the Honda. If you use money as your goal, you activate those limiting beliefs around everything you try to create. This makes it much harder to create. And while it is necessary to work on clearing those beliefs (see our article on limiting beliefs) and changing them to something more positive and abundant, while you are doing that it is easier to create what you want along the way, if you go straight for the real desire. And always, if your goal is something specific, and not just a lifestyle change or general increase in your standard of living, it’s more effective and direct to go straight to the goal. Visualize the car, the stereo set, the vacation, and so on, and let the universe determine how you get it. By Margie Waters
