The Holographic Universe
~ by Michael Talbot
This book is one of the most fascinating I’ve read in recent memory, very clearly written and easy to understand for non-scientific types. I could not put it down! Talbot describes how many leading quantum physicists now believe that our Universe is actually a huge hologram, and that what we perceive on a daily basis is an illusion created by our minds. He draws on fascinating research by many world renowned scientists, including David Bohm's mind-bending work in quantum physics, and his holographic model of the Universe, as well as Karl Pribram's neuroscience research and his holographic model of the brain (but don’t let that scare you away!). These scientists provide compelling evidence that things are not as they appear to us. Talbot describes hundreds of different scientific experiments (all well documented) that call into question what we have always thought about our planet and our existence. He also suggests that seeing the Universe as a hologram explains much of the paranormal phenomenon that is otherwise unexplainable.

For instance, Talbot describes an Indian holy man named Sathya Sai Baba who has been studied by many scientists over a half century. Sai Baba mastered the ability to create objects out of his bare hands, beginning when he was only fourteen years old. He can manifest beautiful jewelry, rare fruits, piping hot delicious foods, fragrant oils, sacred ash, and many other objects. These objects appear in his hands or in the air slightly below them. He can produce enough sacred ash to fill several drums, and spread it all around the room. Of course there is no way he can store that amount of ash on his person, so where did it come from?
(A friend of mine has seen Sai Baba in person, and she purposely sat close enough to be able to look up his sleeves. There was nothing up there aside from his arms, which was enough to convince her that he was not a fake.)
Another unusual phenomena Talbot describes is that certain people with multiple personality disorder sometimes exhibit illnesses or allergies in one or more of their identities but not all of them. For instance, he describes a man who was horribly allergic to orange juice in all but one of his personalities. That personality could drink orange juice all day long and have no reaction, whereas all his others would break out into a terrible rash.
Another man had one personality who was extremely allergic to bee stings. One day he was at his therapist’s office and his eye was swollen to the size of a baseball. His therapist was so concerned she called a doctor. By the time the doctor had arrived, the patient had switched to another personality, and the swelling was gone. The very next day, the patient was in the therapist’s office again, and the personality with the allergy “popped in”. Immediately his eye swelled back up again to the same size it was the previous day! She once again called the doctor, who arrived and treated the sting. He was amazed at the difference since he had seen no swelling the day before.
At the very least, this research tells us that our minds have tremendous power and influence over our bodies, and that there is much more to learn. But it can also provide evidence that our minds, our bodies, and our Universe are quite possibly holographic in nature.
